Effects of Large Cyclic Six-Pulse Thyristor Loads on a Rural Distribution System: A Case History

This paper describes the impact of a large cyclical mining load employing six-pulse thyristor bridge rectifiers upon a rural distribution system. The thyristor bridge rectifiers are utilized on dc driven excavators in the mine. An analysis of voltage flicker and harmonics on the distribution system is presented with the resulting operating experience. Use of diesel generation is shown as a method of reducing voltage flicker.
