Abstract :
The conventional, complex methods of explaining field-oriented control (FOC) of an induction motor are contrasted with a simple alternative. The simple method starts from the well-known d, q equations and avoids any further complicated derivations and assumptions of artificial turns ratio. Instead it allows the internal motor decoupling process to be physically visualized via block diagram reduction, and the explanation flows in a logical and easily understandable manner. This method of explaining FOC has been used successfully in a course for graduate students who are familiar with the d, q theory of induction machines
