Abstract :
The authors show that spectral filtering of short pulses from an electrically gain-switched 1.5 μm DFB laser produces a substantial increase (12 dB) in the noise of the pulse train due to a mode partition effect. The implication of these results is considered for the situation where an erbium doped fibre amplifier is used to amplify gain-switched pulses
