Abstract :
A practical application of synchronous closing (voltage zero energization) to reduce HV and EHV shunt capacitor in-rush currents and overvoltages is presented with field results. Switch and circuit breaker timing and dielectric performance are discussed. A simple electronic circuit which improves switch consistency and accomplishes the required timing is described.
