Abstract
A novel approach to determine whether ferroresonance can occur is developed. It is based on the energy transferred from the system to the voltage transformer during the switching transient. This approach is used to develop a practical test criterion to indicate if ferroresonance can occur at a specific station. The numerical values of the parameters used in this criteria can be easily determined for any station. The analytical results are compared with experimental data gathered at three stations on the AEP system with good agreement
