Abstract :
A personal perspective on circuit simulation from the mid-1960s through the mid-1970s is given. Attempts to use an optimization-based approach to design are described. The development of circuit simulation programs is chronicled, and the manipulation of sparse matrices is discussed. Commercialization of simulation programs is addressed, with particular attention to SPICE, illuminating its strengths, uncovering its weaknesses, and projecting its future.<>
