Abstract :
This paper describes a computer-aided design method that utilizes a search technique for calculating controller parameters based on design constraints specified in the frequency domain. The method has general application to SISO type processes and multi-variable systems. It is specifically applicable to power system controller design problems where the process is quite complex and several practical constraints, such as controller bandwidth and gain limitation, must be applied while calculating the control parameters to satisfy a certain phase lead or other contribution from the controller. An example is given in the paper where the method is applied to the design of a PSS for a multi-machine system. The power system model was obtained from direct measurements on a synchronous generator during field tests.
