Abstract :
Loss minimization, cost minimization and voltage stability are the major concerns for modern power system networks operating under highly stressed conditions due to continuously increased power demand. So, it is necessary to analyze the power system considering these factors. A Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) device such as Static Var Compensator (SVC) in a power system improves the voltage stability, reduces the power loss and also improves the load ability of the system. This study investigates the application of Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) technique to find optimal location and rated value of SVC thus optimizing total power loss, generation cost, FACTS device cost and improving voltage profile in the power system. Simulations are performed on IEEE 14 bus and IEEE 57 bus. It is observed from the results that total loss is optimized, total cost is minimized and voltage profile is improved.
