Abstract :
The critical charge method developed in the Leningrad Polytechnical Institute enables the estimation of the 50% breakdown voltage of very long conductor (or bundle)-to-plane gaps. The method is based on the assumption that the charge injected into the gap prior to the development of the leader is constant and practically independent of the gap length.
