Abstract
Write heads with rectangular and crescent-shaped main poles were used for simulations of recording in perpendicular media. Transition curvature was reduced by using a crescent-shaped head, but the lower head-field gradient also reduced the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The addition of a trailing shield narrowed the difference in SNR between the two types of heads, whilst the track width was up to 3 nm narrower when written by a crescent-shaped head.
