Abstract

Although the network in Tanzania is still small and in poor condition, progress has been made since the publication of the Missing Link Report in 1984. Despite daunting social and economic obstacles, the country has set a goal of one telephone per hundred people by the year 2000. To accelerate the improvements necessary in the telecommunication sector in Tanzania, the government restructured the sector under the 1993 Parliamentary Acts which, among other things, sought to: limit the government´s role in setting sector policy on telecommunications; and establish an independent regulatory body to regulate operator(s) and administer government sector policy.<>
