Abstract :
Since electric power is increasing in usage for boosting and melting of glass, both in number of applications and electrical size, it is now imperative to use sound electrical engineering fundamental practices when designing electrical power control systems. This paper will discuss electrical engineering fundamentals and how state-of-the-art design in silicon-controlled rectifiers can be incorporated into design considerations to achieve successful applications of electrical power to the glass melting process. Engineering fundamentals discussed are voltage, current, and power (kW) sizing: type and configuration of equipment; power-factor control, and methods and considerations for system cooling.
