Abstract :
The design of compensation for industrial rectifier units is analyzed. The first section outlines a general method of analysis using operational impedances. Per-unit impedance and frequency as related to the operational impedance is discussed. A general harmonic analysis is described which applies root locus techniques to the study of the system operational impedance. This technique may be used to identify quickly systems which may be successfully compensated by capacitors with reactors tuned to the 4.7th harmonic and provides insight into the design of systems for which compensation tuned to the 4.7th harmonic is not desirable. A general design guide is presented, and practical examples of the design strategy are included. This technique is straightforward and easy to apply and provides insight into the resonant characteristics of the system while avoiding much of the computation needed for previous techniques.
