Abstract :
A magnet system designed for use in the polarized target of the CERN SMC experiment is under construction at Saclay. It consists of three concentric coil systems; a main inner solenoid with compensation coils at the ends; an assembly of 2×8 correction windings distributed along the solenoid; and an outer saddle coil type dipole. Particular attention is given to the magnet system characteristics, solenoid design, correction coil design, quench propagation, and magnet manufacture
