Abstract :
The characteristics of a displacement sensor, such as sensitivity and linearity, were found to be improved by the use of a superconductor. The sensor was constructed of a superconducting YBCO cylinder, an excitation coil, and a differential coil. The cylinder can be shifted ±12 mm along the axial direction of the differential coil by moving a holder attached to the cylinder. Experimental results indicate that the characteristics of the displacement sensor such as sensitivity, linearity, and stability are improved over those of nonsuperconducting metal rods. The authors also examine the electrical properties of cylinders constructed with and without a concentration of silver powder
