Abstract :
Significant developments during 1989 are described. Among them are: the introduction of several RISC (reduced-instruction-set computer) workstations at personal-computer (PC) prices; the arrival in 1989 of personal computers built around Intel´s 80486 processor; a multiprocessing PC that competes head on with minicomputers; a variety of PC systems built around Intel´s 16-MHz 386SX processor, an 80386 in a smaller package; four new Macintosh computers; growing interest in multimedia desktop computers; and growing use of X window display terminals.<>
