Abstract :
A record unrepeatered transmission span of 410 km at 2.488 Gbit/s for a single remotely pumped erbium amplifier is reported. Dispersion compensating fibre is used at the receiver to minimise the self-phase modulation effects associated with high transmitted powers (+19.5 dBm). The remote amplifier is pumped over the transmission fibre from the receiver end using a 300 mW 1480 nm pump. The high 1480 nm pump power ensures Raman gain over the last fibre length
