Abstract :
This paper examines some of the practical difficulties faced by the engineer trying to develop machine intelligence for a commercial system ¿¿ a voice-operated database inquiry system for the public telephone network. The decisions taken during this project are discussed to highlight some advantages and disadvantages of exploiting machine intelligence techniques.
