Abstract

Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology offers tremendous potential for integration of optoelectronic functions on a silicon substrate. The authors have demonstrated an integrated 3 dB optical directional coupler using SOI rib waveguides. The device has an excess insertion loss of 1.9 dB and represents a key component for the realisation of wavelength filters in silicon integrated circuit technology
