Abstract :
In-line singlemode optical amplifiers have been constructed using a resonant coupling of light power from polished singlemode fibre to planar multimode waveguide with a laser-active LiF:F2+ or LiF:F2- colour centre crystal superstrate. The F2+ (or LiF:F2- ) luminescence was produced in the superstrate by excitation with an evanescent wave from the waveguide. A relative gain ⩾2 was obtained using these crystals
