Abstract :
It is demonstrated that ultra-long-haul links at 10 Gbit/s could be upgraded to 40 Gbit/s without any change to the infrastructure (fibre arrangement, amplifiers, dispersion map). The system capacity is doubled with alternate-polarisation RZ-DPSK modulation format.
