Abstract :
This paper describes our experiences in creating an initial prescription dialysis therapy advisor to assist physicians in prescribing dialysis regimens for patients who are to begin maintenance hemodialysis treatment. Two implementation methods are described: 1) a procedurally based methodology, and 2) a rule-based system. The advantages and disadvantages of each are discussed and the results of using the advisory system with patients are examined. The initial prescription advisory or consultation system is envisioned as ultimately becoming part of a simulated community of experts that provides advice on all aspects of dialysis therapy.
