Abstract :
The longitudinal mode discrimination above threshold in both distributed feedback lasers with one external reflector and those with phase-shifted grating structures is studied. By numerically solving a pair of coupled mode equations, it is shown that when these types of lasers have nonsaturable index coupling, they lose their mode discrimination at powers only a few times the saturation power of the medium due to the effects of spatial hole burning
