  • Abstract
The paper presents some simple yet effective models for evaluating the usefulness of a two-section laser diode as a wavelength converter under various operating conditions. The device considered in the paper is a split electrode Fabry-Perot laser diode, with a photodiode mounted on the gain section. The models used are, for the most part, rate equations that use the mean field approximation. Also included is a simple phase trajectory model that produces time-to-lock information. Clock synchronisation and data modulation are studied. It is shown that the most effective way of injecting the input signal is via the photodiode mounted on the gain section.
