This review of radiation effects work before 1960 will emphasize those parts of the field relevant to electronic equipment. It intends to present the flavor of the early work, probably somewhat subjectively, without attempting a comprehensive review. References are included to samples of the publications; omission of others does not imply anything about the relative value.<>
