Abstract
The problem of separating the first and third modes of oscillation in a standard coaxial oscillator is considered. It is shown that the mode separation (the difference in the settings of one of the two resonant sections for the two modes) increases with the difference between the products of terminating capacitance and characteristic impedance for the two sections. The mode separation is seen to vary quite slowly as a function of frequency.
