Abstract
Talking aids for the blind which require special apparatus are likely to remain expensive because of the small numbers in the potential market. A way around the difficulty is to use a computer, produced for a mass market, as the principal piece of hardware along with special software. There are signs that this approach is about to be used, and the paper addresses the main problems of design.
