Abstract
`Hype´ has played a significant role in the history of artificial neural network research. Unsubstantiated promises are always detrimental to research. Unfortunately, they remain at the forefront of the subject area. It is the authors´ contention that only through industrial application will the true prestige of the technology be realised. To this end, an international industrial Artificial Neural Network Club was established jointly between the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, and the University of Maryland, USA. In this article, application areas where specific industrial benefits have been achieved are highlighted, and potential for future developments considered
