Abstract :
An experimental single-receiver diversity combiner is described for use in the u.h.f. mobile-radio band. It is based on a phase-measurement method using a single-sideband-perturbation technique and is applicable to both a.m. and f.m. transmissions. A series of field trials have demonstrated the validity of the principle, as well as the advantages that can be gained from the use of diversity. In the variety of field conditions found to exist in urban and surburban areas, there are many instances in which often accepted mathematical models do not seem to apply.
