Abstract :
Dielectric development since the mid-1950s, mostly outside North America is described. Emphasis is given to factors that belong to the research environment, such as relations between researchers, institutions, and disciplines, the role of promoters and organizations, the information media, influence from industry, legislation, etc. In conclusion, recent trends in some selected areas are outlined
