Abstract :
The physical meaning of Potier reactance, useful in describing the characteristics of a synchronous generator, and the Potier triangle, useful in obtaining this reactance, are discussed, based on experimental data. The air-gap flux densities in a generator and the terminal quantities are measured both in the no-load test and the zero power-factor test. These data are examined by means of a novel method for analysis of magnetic flux saturation. As a result, the physical meaning of the Potier triangle is obtained analytically. The physical meaning contributes to developing a more accurate model of a synchronous generator with saturation characteristics
