Abstract
Some recent trends in the mathematics of finite elements and practical experience are outlined. The reliability, robustness and effectiveness of the method are discussed. Although only linear stationary problems are discussed, the general trends described are also typical for nonlinear and time-dependent problems. In general, the analysis of elliptic problems seems to be the most advanced
