Abstract
Dynamic characteristics of a high-speed voice coil motor (VCM) for magnetic disk drives are investigated, using a simulation tool. The results of the simulation show very good correlation with the experimental results. It is shown that the shorted-turn thickness can be easily optimized with this tool. It is also shown that in a high-speed VCM, where the state of the system is transient, the coil current does not affect the force constant, because the magnetic flux induced by the coil current localizes in part of the magnetic circuit
