Abstract
This paper presents a critical review of the most relevant experimental data obtained from electrophysiological studies of the Pacinian corpuscles. A mathematical model of the mechanoreceptor is proposed and utilized to clarify the relationships between the variables involved in the mechano-to-neural transduction. This model accounts for the two main components of the corpuscle: the lamellated structure and the peripheral segment of the afferent axon.
