Abstract :
The first SPDS (safety parameter display system) for a BWR plant in Japan began operation in 1987. It consists of a computer system, color CRT (cathode ray tube) displays and a high-speed optical-fiber data transmission system. It receives process data from the process computer, and provides plant safety status information through CRT display screens. The latter consist of primary, trend, and other screens which are designed both for emergency cases and usual plant supervision. Japanese utilities are installing SPDSs in operating plants as well as plants under construction. In the former case the additional system is linked to the existing process computer. In the latter case the system is integrated into the process computer system. The SPDS installation methodology is described
