Abstract
In 1947, the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) selected Joseph Slepian as the recipient of the Edison Medal. He was cited "for his theoretical and practical contributions to power systems through circuit analysis, arc control, and current interruption." He spent most of his professional career as an engineer-inventor and mentor with the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company. His inventions included the "autovalve" lighting arrester and the "ignitron," a mercury-arc rectifier.
