Abstract :
The independent not-for-profit, research & development (R&D) organization can contribute materially to the welfare and security of our populace. It is like a for-profit organization in the sense that it must operate in an effective mode and therefore has many similar operational characteristics. This paper succinctly summarizes important general operational elements, such as, income streams, principal business concerns, return-on-investment, business cycle, and principal tools. Other aspects given may be somewhat different from the norm. The operational needs may contain a different element that is termed staff technical advisory group. This element advises management on new technical business directions. Other elements covered are two approaches for business promotion using imagination and creativity to create new markets
