Abstract :
Common circuit elements in digital designs lead to correlated errors that overwhelm bit-oriented error-correcting devices used for fault-tolerance. The authors describe the design and implementation of a circuit that will either correct a single nibble (4-bit) error or detect a double nibble error, but not both simultaneously. It uses a shortened Reed-Solomon code over a field with 16 elements.
