Abstract

The author presents the fundamentals of Telebras (Telecommunicacoes Brasileiras S.A.) R&D activities, which represent over 90% of all research and development efforts in the field of telecommunications in Brazil. He describes Telebras´ strategy and operational approach. He reports results obtained in the areas of time-division electronic switching, digital transmission, satellite communications, fiber optic communications, data and text communications, outside plant, microelectronics and product technology. He examines briefly future trends in the Brazilian telecommunications industry.<>
