Abstract :
This article describes the experiences of an electro-mechanical engineer who spent time, via the Voluntary Services Overseas organization, in Ethiopia. His remit was to teach maintenance skills in a rapidly expanding university/hospital campus. The article outlines the environment found there and the problems encountered, such as lack of a workshop, personnel with engineering skills, or safety regulations. The instability of the mains power supply is also discussed.
