Abstract :
The authors describe axisymmetric (2-D) calculation of the height and shape of the electromagnetically supported column of metal in an electromagnetic caster. The computations are self-consistent in that the influence of melt shape on the electromagnetic fields, as well as the reverse, is accounted for. Results are presented showing the effect of design and operating parameters (inductor geometry, current and frequency, and screen conductivity) on the ability of a caster to support liquid metal
