Abstract :
A fundamental sensitivity limit is calculated for optical differential eight-level phase-shift keying (OD8PSK). Performance degradations in practical implementations due to polarization and spectral filtering, single-ended receiving, phase offset error, and finite laser linewidth are investigated. From these results, critical OD8PSK transmitter and receiver design parameters are extracted.
