  • Abstract
To accurately study traffic patterns and incidents, researchers need a data set that encompasses day and night lighting, various weather conditions, and different road configurations. Therefore, the VME-MS team needed an all-weather, self-illuminating, mobile sensor station. ERIM is combining three Perceptron 3D Lasar datacameras with ERIM custom software, which extracts vehicle positions and headings from the raw data. The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute will use the system to analyze traffic flow, near-miss incidents, and the effects of various active safety systems in a cooperative agreement with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
