Abstract :
Suppose war broke out in Europe today. Could the U.S. Air Force successfully enter enemy territory, knock out heavily defended airfields, and win in air-to-air combat with Soviet pilots? Probably not, says Lieutenant General John T. Chain Jr., the Air Force´s deputy chief of staff for plans and operations. In a speech last spring before 300 of the nation´s top military officials and industrialists at an Air Force Association symposium, Gen. Chain warned of deficiencies that put U.S. pilots at a disadvantage.
