Abstract :
The effect of multiple access protocols (MAC) on the quality of service (QoS) guarantees has been investigated in order to efficiently handle multimedia traffic within UMTS terrestrial radio access (UTRA). Attention is focussed on a buffered multiple access system assuming a dual mode packet access scheme for joint voice and data transmissions. The performance of the channel assignment protocols has been derived by means of access delay and interference level considering the traffic models of new data services. It follows that a simple slotted ALOHA (S-ALOHA) scheme can be used in a multimedia UTRA system by obtaining acceptable access delays for voice and data users. In particular, it is important to point out the effect of the MAC protocol on the interference level
