Abstract
This article describes a practical and economical approach that was recently used in the West Side Hydro Automation Project at Enron Portland General Electric (USA). That project involved the upgraded automation for remote control of hydropower plants along three rivers in northwest Oregon. Innovative and practical approaches were used to obtain the best possible results with least cost and with least dependence on proprietary system elements. Also, a major objective was to have a speedy process for the planning and implementation of the project
