Abstract :
Digital audio tape (DAT) drive mechanisms are discussed with emphasis on the mechanical problems involved in high-precision positioning of the tape with respect to the recording head. Positioning systems used for compact disk players and a DAT drive system developed by the authors are compared. The various forces applied or induced on the recording media are considered
