Abstract :
It is argued that, from a system perspective, the commonly used figure of merit for dispersion-compensating fiber (DCF) is not directly related to performance when fiber nonlinearities are taken into account. Increasing dispersion while decreasing figure of merit in the fiber design can in some cases lower system penalties. A new "figure of merit" that closely relates to system performance is accordingly introduced. Examples of system penalty evaluation are provided for single channel nonlinearities.
