Abstract :
A class of reduced state sequence estimation techniques is described. The technique groups pairs of complement states to form a reduced state trellis. The resultant reduced state detector has negligible performance loss, and more importantly, the trellis is a regular radix-2 trellis, which is amenable to implementation. Application of this complement state grouping technique to various partial response channels is discussed
