Abstract
Metal oxide arresters are ideal for protection of rotating machines against overvoltages. The absence of the gaps required in older arresters results in more consistent operation and improved protection for fast front surges. This paper discusses the application requirements for various kinds of medium voltage systems and suggests the characteristics of arresters which would be most desirable for the protection of equipment on the systems.
